Disease Facts - Porcine Circovirus Associated Disease - a variable presentation

Within the UK over the last ten years, the condition originally known as Porcine Multisystemic Wasting Disease has caused major losses in growing pigs - in many farms complicated with skin haemorrhages typical of Dermatitis Nephropathy Syndrome (PDNS)in older pigs. Over the years the disease has evolved and altered its presentation, as the post-weaning loss of condition has become less obvious. Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is now well established as the major and necessary cause of these syndromes. A range of clinical manifestations associated with PCV2 infection in pigs has been reported so far, including subclinical infection, PMWS, PDNS, granulomatous enteritis, interstitial pneumonia, reproductive disease and congenital tremor, all of whichare now covered under the term 'Porcine Circovirus type 2- Associated Disease', or PCVAD.
