Introduction to the special issue: In memoriam Professor Gertrude Fleming Rempfer on the occasion of her 100th birthday

This special issue is dedicated to Gertrude F. Rempfer who would have celebrated her 100th birthday on January 30th of this year. Gertrude was active and engaged in routine life through most of 2011, but passed away on October 4th-just 4 months short of her much anticipated anniversary. This issue contains four retrospective articles and twelve original papers by colleagues and co-scientists, who had the privilege of knowing her and collaborating with her, and who wish to express their high appreciation with excerpts from their own research.
