Ultrasonography is widely available, safe and relatively cheap when compared with other imaging modalities, such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. These characteristics make it the imaging modality of choice in obstetrics and gynecology. Unfortunately, ultrasonography is also highly operator-dependent, and one may argue that the discriminating factor determining the quality of an ultrasound examination is the competence of the examiner. Indeed, the UK's National Health Service recently identified the following three key operator-dependent factors requiring improvement: level of training, awareness of when it is necessary to request assistance from senior colleagues and human error.
