Ultrasound-Guided Biopsy of the Prostate: New Updates

Prostate cancer is the most frequently detected cancer in men, with about 700,000 patients diagnosed worldwide each year, accounting for 25% of new cancer cases in men and 9% of cancer-related deaths.1'2 One in 6 men are affected by prostate cancer during their lifetime. Autopsy studies show foci of prostate cancer in up to 70% to 80% of 80-year-old men who died of other causes.3 Prostate biopsy to diagnose prostate cancer with digital guidance was introduced by Astraldi in 1937.4 The gold standard technique in the diagnosis of prostate cancer is transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided biopsy, which was initially described by Wantanebe and colleagues in 1968.5 Increased prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing over the last 2 decades has resulted in increased prostate biopsies to show pathologic diagnosis of prostate cancer. Because the trans-rectal route is used in TRUS-guided prostate biopsy, this procedure has complication risks, mostly related to infection and bleeding.
