The going rate for high-quality U.S. low-vol coal is in the mid-90 dollars/ton (at the mine) range, but some buyers are getting a better deal courtesy of a few bargain sellers. That's the word from a source familiar with negotiations between U.S. suppliers and domestic and foreign buyers. "The low-vol price for the incumbents is the mid-90s dollars," the source said. "If you have coal, you can do that. If you take less, you are foolish. Some of these guys are doing deals in the 80s dollars. I don't understand it. They think they have to discount their coal to break in. They have laid a low-80 dollars number on the table. They feel like they are the new guy on the block and have to discount prices to steal away the business from the incumbents. They feel they need to develop a relationship."
