A couple of developments, probably short-term issues that won't have staggering international market implications, are helping push upward thermal coal pricing, and a potential third factor might eventually add momentum to the rise in pricing. While the strike by port and rail workers in South Africa had threatened to delay coal exports to India and other countries if prolonged, a settlement with one of the unions was reached just prior to U.S. Coal Review's deadline. The other union appeared close to settling. But a cyclone in of India could disrupt the discharge of coal vessels at ports in India.
