The NYMEX barge coal futures market got the daylights kicked out of it this past week - it was Woody Allen versus Gorilla Monsoon. As crude oil prices continued to bow to intense downward pressure, so too did the coal market. There was no direct physical activity to offset the trading sentiment. Following five days of trading on the Central Appalachian Coal contract at the New York Mercantile Exchange that culminated in December 18 settlements, the January 2009 front month price was down a knee-buckling 13.27 dollars, losses occurring on a daily basis. The February number lost 10.40 dollars, March 10.83 dollars.
