At university I had every intention of becoming a lawyer, but after finishing my finals things changed. Working for a number of different firms gave me real-world experience of law, which made me realise that I couldn't make a difference as a lawyer. I wasn't going to change the world. After a bit of a panic I thought: 'I've learned all this legislation, I should use it'. So I joined British Rail's legal department focusing on public liability. Within three weeks I was walking up and down railway lines assessing how dangerous level crossings were. That's what started me on health and safety and once you're into it you're hooked!
