A new national skills academy for power has been given the green light for development by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. Power sector employers have promised 500,000 pounds for its development over the next year and a further 1 million pounds once it is up and operational in October 2009. The aim of the academy is to tackle skills shortages in the power industry that have been estimated by Energy and Utility Skills (EU Skills), the sector skills council for the energy and. utilities sectors, and the Power Sector Skills Strategy" Group (PSSSG) to require 9,000 new workers in electricity distribution alone by 2014.
