My education didn't really get me where I am today. Theatre was my first passion but I realised I didn't have the total hunger for it that you need to succeed. After finishing school I started to travel around the world and I realised that the richest experiences in life were going to be linked to cultures and seeing as much of the world as I could. I decided I wanted to base my career around this - hence my interest in the airline industry. I went into the airline business in 1976, working for a company that was taking full advantage of deregulation in the US. There were fantastic opportunities. I became head of cabin crew when I was 27. The business was expanding around the world, but I had the feeling it wouldn't last so I set my sights on what looked like the best airline and that was British Airways (BA).
