In 1946, a Russian Naval Patent officer, Genrich Altshuller, noticed similarities between solutions invented in different fields. His temerity in suggesting to Stalin that he could improve invention earned him a vacation in a Siberian Gulag, but after the Russian leader's death he was released and continued his research.
