Last time we met Donatello Mimuther, Greer Grate & Gate's (GG&G) quality manager with connections, his brother-in-law had hired him, you will recall, as he emerged from a short prison term, in spite of the paucity of his qualifications. When Jefferson Thomas, a rebellious (perhaps even revolutionary) technician, challenged him with a statistical problem, Donatello was able to hold on to his reputation by soliciting the opinion of his statistics professor at the community college where he is enrolled in an effort to learn something about SPC. Things are not going particularly well with his statistical education, but Donatello has learned that by continuing to take courses, he will sustain the resource that he has found in his professor, Dr Stan Deviation. He is one of those students who is not especially motivated by grades. After all, his current position demands only that he keep his head above water and have the appearance of SPC knowledge. He feels certain that his knowledge has impressed technician Thomas. Thomas, on the other hand, felt empowered by the answer to his question about a series of points below the mean. He had suspected the correct answer, and Professor Deviation's solution - imparted to Jefferson Thomas through Donatello - simply verified it. Thomas has begun to wonder why he cannot be the-quality manager, since he obviously knows so much.
