Microorganisms are ubiquitous in the environment.They exist in the air we breathe,the food we eat,the water we drink.In general,these microorganisms live in a symbiotic relationship with humans and other animals.As everyone knows,there are opportunistic pathogens that can be severe and disastrous to humans but,in general,they do not cause harm but live within us and all living creatures.Problems occur in specific situations that allow the overgrowth of microorganisms.When a human dies,for example,and the body's defense systems cease to function,microorganisms begin to reproduce at an extremely rapid rate.Since the body can no longer fight bacteria,the bacteria begins to take over the body.The same can be true in many industrial situations in which bacteria find a hospitable environment for reproduction.In paper mills,for instance,water,furnish and additives necessary for paper production create a hospitable environment for bacterial growth.Pulp contains food for bacteria and when pulp is kept in large amounts in situations that are warm and wet,it becomes a hothouse for bacterial growth.
