China expansion will stir up competition in global export markets

As Chinese boxboard producers ramp up more than four million tonnes of new ivory board, coated duplex, and liquid packaging capacity, the aggressive expansion will challenge world exporters in global markets, according to a R1S1 study. While Asia now is the most important region for boxboard demand growth, the wave of new capacity will not only close off an important destination for US product, but will also thrust Chinese suppliers into export markets, lifting Chinese total boxboard export volumes from under 500,000 tonnes in 2012 to near 1.8 million tonnes in 2014, according to RISI's World Boxboard Study.
