US paper/board exports best imports for third year with $1.14 billion surplus

US exports of paper and paperboard exceeded imports for a third consecutive year in 2011 — likely the first time for such a trend since before the 1950s. For the total industry, including recovered paper, pulp and converted products, the US trade balance in 2011 showed a surplus of 26 million tonnes and $6.1 billion, according to annualized US Census Bureau data through December compiled by the American Forest & Paper Assn.
