North America's largest thermal paper-maker,Appleton,will spend 100 million on a new coater for making thermal paper as well as increasing output at its 122,500 tpy West Carrollton,Ohio,mill,the company said on Jan.26.The project comes just as major customers say the demand for two-sided thermal paper is jumping in the U.S.-and after it has been steadily growing the last five years.Appleton produces thermal paper in rolls that are sold to converters who cut the paper to size for customers.The main end users are major retail stores that use thermal paper for point-of-sale customer receipts.Thermal paper also is actively used and growing in use as casino stubs and ATM receipts,and for ballot box voting tallies.
