SP Fiber accelerates conversion from newsprint to packaging at Newberg; PM 5 is abruptly closed

SP Fiber Technologies shifted much-discussed plans for a machine conversion at its 320,000 tonnes/yr newsprint mill at Newberg, OR, from the back burner to the front, abruptly accelerating a project some analysts believed was off for the foreseeable future. The new timetable for the plan was announced just 48 hours before the PM shut. SP said in a Jan. 13 statement that Newberg's 130,000 tonnes/yr PM No. 5 - the smaller of the mill's two machines ~ would cease newsprint production on Jan. 15 to allow for the necessary process modifications.
