An empirical assessment of the EFQM excellence model: Evaluation as a TQM framework relative to the MBNQA model

It is known that in order to excel in their business, organizations adopt the Total Quality Management (TQM) concept which is, in fact, an approach to management embracing both social and technical dimensions aimed at achieving excellent results. In order to put TQM into practice these organizations follows the implementation criteria according to a specific framework provided by various quality award models such as Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) model and the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Excellence model. However, there is paucity of empirical research confirming whether these models clearly reflect the main assumptions of TQM. Therefore, it is attempted by the authors to analyze empirically the extent to which the EFQM Excellence model captures the main assumptions in the TQM concept. Based on the survey data collected, the analyses are carried out and the results confirm that EFQM Excellence model, in fact, clearly represents the TQM concepts. (113 refs.)
