Regional quality assurance activity in higher education in Southeast Asia: Its characteristics and driving forces

Today's higher education faces stiff competition as the countries across the world attempt to bring their institutions competitive at global level. Various regional networks have been formed to take care of quality assurance activities at the regional level and then to gain competitive advantage. In this connection, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been formed by the countries with as many member universities. The regional activities in higher education in Southeast Asia organized by ASEAN University Network are discussed. In this regard, how these member universities and their respective countries extended support in forming guidelines, evaluation criteria etc., are discussed. It is observed that this effort has resulted in achieving humanization of higher education in the Southeast region and help to be competitive globally. (17 refs.)
