Sales of upmarket crisps in unusual flavours seem as strong as ever. Among the earliest success stories was a small company which set up shop in a former railway goods shed in deepest Devon. GEOFF FAGOTTO, who first visited Burts Potato Chips four years ago, has been back for a tour of their new premises. When POTATO REVIEW visited Burts' factory back in 2002 it had an unmistakable cuddly charm. Crisp frying filled the confines of the old GWR parcel shed with steam, creating a scene reminiscent of departing trains loaded with Devon produce destined for the London markets. This was part of the appeal and the company used the quirky image unashamedly to promote their product.
