The following column is from remarks made by the author at the United Potato Growers of America, United Potato Growers of Canada and Potato Marketing Association of North America summit held February 2007 in Las Vegas, NV. A grower who markets his crops or products alone has very little bargaining power. He is at the mercy of the market, where a processor could turn away his crop or delay receiving it. A grower is especially vulnerable if there is a market surplus. Yet an individual grower can do very little to bring supply in line with demand.
