Will the effort to form a federation of potato grower cooperatives across North America be enough to allow growers to hold supplies in line and keep them in business? UNITED Potato Growers of America is moving rapidly throughout the nation and into Canada in an effort to "stop the hemorrhaging," as one official said, and return growers to profitability. The task was daunting as several growers met in the fall of 2004 and started discussions on formation of such a cooperative. These Idaho industry leaders knew it had to begin in Idaho, the nation's leading fresh-potato producer.
