Consolidation and change on the trading floor

Light+Building in Frankfurt once again lived up to its name as the leading trade fair worldwide for lighting. The products on show and the accompanying programme offered by the fair authorities were a clear expression of the state of the industry and of the market. Lighting technology and energy efficiency took over as the two most important topics of discussion. There were, however, no signs of any true innovations. The main focus was on how well new technologies could be combined with or integrated into design. The term LED no longer smacks of innovation. The tiny light sources have become part of what is normal or standard. Talking of standards: that definitely is a new topic. Zhaga - the consortium for the standardization of LED engines - did crop up a lot in conversations, although the goal of the effort appears to be confined to establishing well defined interface specifications rather than defining quality standards for the LEDs themselves.
