Re: 'Neutralizing human monoclonal antibodies binding multiple serotypes of botulinum neurotoxin' by Garcia-Rodriguez et al., PEDS, 2011;24:321-331.

We would like to comment on the paper recently published by Marks and colleagues (Garcia-Rodriguez et al., 2011) developing human monoclonal antibodies binding multiple serotypes of botulinum neurotoxin. It is stated in the introduction that, 'Polyclonal sera raised against one serotype does not cross react with other serotypes. Moreover, no mAbs have been reported which bind to more than one BoNT serotype,' and in the discussion, '.. .we can find no examples in the literature of such cross-serotype binding BoNT antibodies', '...polyclonal sera uniquely define each "serotype"'. We would like to suggest that the authors qualify these statements to more accurately capture the intricacies of BoNT antibody reactivity discovered by their predecessors.
