Punjab is the second largest producer of wheat and with 11 per cent of the country's wheat area; its contribution is 17 per cent, recording the highest per hectare yield in India. Wheat is the staple food in the country and has been used in differentforms like chapatti, bread, dalia etc. for human being and wheat straw is used as toorhi. Wheat crop needs cool climate in early growth stages for proper tillering and to save the crop from diseases. Prolonged cloudiness and rains at early stages may make the crop more vulnerable to yellow rusts.
