Rice is the most important kharif season cereal crop of Punjab, During 2007-08 it occupied an area of 26.10 lakh hectares with production of 104.89 lakh tones of milled rice. It had the highest average productivity of 4019 kg of rice per hectare in the country. The remarkable progress made during the past four decades of rice cultivation in Punjab is credited to the development and large scale adoption of short statured semi dwarf, fertilizer responsive high yielding varieties along with matching production and protection technologies. These varieties possess desired grain quality, lodging tolerance and resistance to the prevalent diseases especially bacterial blight. Moreover, due to their suitable growth duration these varieties fit well in various crop rotations prevalent in the state.
