Judicious water use in summer crops

Continuous efforts are being made at Punjab Agricultural University to develop new technologies for judicious use of irrigation particularly In summer crops. A bout two-thirds of total water consumed is used for irrigation purposes. Most (about 80 percent) of this irrigation water requirement in Punjab is met through ground water resources with the result that ground water table has been falling at an alarming rate during the last decade. If the rapid decline in water table is not arrested, Punjab soils may face desert like situation. Continuous efforts are being made at Punjab Agricultural University to develop new technologies for judicious use of irrigation water, particularly in summer crops, developed various techniques from time to time to higher crop yields with the use of minimum amounts of irrigation water. Some of the important techniques for judicious use of irrigation water in summer crops are discussed below.
