Semidwarf High Yielding Rice Varieties for the Punjab State

RICE has become the major Kharif crop in the Punjab. There had been tremendous increase in area production and productivity of the rice crop during the last 30 years. Punjab ranks first in rice productivity in India and contributes more than 40 per cent rice towards central pool every year. Improved varieties, matching production and protection technologies have played pivotal role in ushering in an era of green revolution and Punjab being called 'food bowl' of India. Continuous efforts are being made at Punjab Agricultural University to develop improved rice varieties possessing high yield, pest resistance, suitable grain quality and maturity satisfying needs of different farming systems. From time to time a number of rice varieties have been evolved and recommended for cultivation in the state.
