Technology for Hybrid Seed Production in Cotton

COTTON occupies an important place among the Kharif crops and is grown over an area of 5.32 lakh hectare. Recently, the PAU has developed and released two cotton hybrids namely Fateh (American cotton) and LDH-11 (Dcsi cotton). Production of quality hybrid seed of cotton is a highly skilled and labour intensive job and requires a thorough understanding of various practices to minimize costs and maximise returns. The hybrid seed of cotton is produced by crossing two good combining inbred lines manually, involving emasculation and hand pollination. Various steps involved in the production of hybrid seed are described as under.
