Keeping in view, the nutrient requirement of different crops in relation to soil quality/fertility status and quality of irrigation water, the University has evolved sound technologies to enhance crop yields. The fertilizer recommendations are given in the Package of Practices for kharif and rabi crops of Punjab. THE contribution of agriculture to the state income in Punjab is 27 percent. The main contribution comes from rice and wheat cropping sequence. While 87 percent of net sown area is under rice, the area under wheat is 96 percent. The major fertilizer nutrients used in crop production are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K).
