Calves bawl out through the hot afternoon air in Columbus, Texas. It's branding time at Bob Stallman's farm. Unfamiliar with the procedure, Stallman's new neighbors hear the wails and assume that calves are being abused. Conflict ensues. "When you'rebranding or tagging, calves will cry. They don't like being separated from their mamas," explains Stallman, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation. Sounds logical. Had he explained this to his neighbors prior to branding day, their misunderstanding could have been prevented.
