First report on Phytophthora spp. and Pythium litorale occurrence in Beskid's rivers (of the Ukrainian Carpathians)

Occurrence of Phytophthora species in the rivers Stryj and Yasenytsya and in the lake situated in the National Park of "Skoliwski Beskidy" in Ukraina was studied. Detection of the pathogen was carried out in October and November in 2011. Baiting technique with rhododendron leaf baits cultivar Nova Zembla was used for microorganisms isolation from water. Species were identified on the basis of their morphological features and using molecular methods. Studies showed the occurrence of the species Phytophthora gonapodyides, P. lacustris and Pythium litorale in analyzed water sources. In the laboratory conditions the pathogenicity of obtained isolates to rhododendron was determined. This has been the first report of Phytophthora species in water sourcesin the Ukraine.
