A study was conducted in 2002-04 in Lublin, Poland, to assess the efficacy of different weed regulation methods in spring barley cultivated in organic, conventional and integrated crop production system. In the conventional and integrated system, spring barley was cultivated in pure stand, whereas in the organic system, the barley was grown with white clover [Trifolium repens] and lucerne. In the conventional system, weeds were controlled by herbicides, whereas in the integrated system, mechanical weed control was supplemented by moderate herbicide use. Weed infestation was assessed qualitatively and quantitatively in the dough stage of spring barley. Weed diversity was the greatest in spring barley cultivated in the organic system. The weed number and dry matter were also the highest in the organic system (105 plants/m2 and 23 g/m2, respectively). Weed community in the organic system was dominated by Chenopodium album, Viola arvensis, Stellaria media, Polygonum convolvulus and Galium aparine. Weed diversity and level of infestation in the integrated and conventional systems were much lower than in the organic system.
