Nowadays it is possible to find a great variety of sizing tools for PV stand-alone systems. They use different assumptions to calculate radiation on inclined sui faces and to model PV system Components. They therefore lead to significantly different results when sizing the same stand-alone PV system. Obviously, this fact is not helping PV professionals to adopt rigorous sizing procedures, and tends to perpetuate the use of methods merely based on previous experience and guesswork. This paper shows that the P V sizing problem depends on basic statistical laws that limit the accuracy of the results, irrespective of whether more complex models are used. As a consequence, the essential merit of a sizing tool is not its detailed description of PV system behaviour but its uniformity and universal use. For this purpose, a standard simulation model for P V sizing is proposed. Finally, the possible usefulness of the model in facing the new challenges of large-scale rural electrification programmes is discussed.
