摘要

Direct drilling techniques offer real benefits to farmers through reduced erosion, timeliness of sowing and maintenance of soil organic matter and structure. Early attemps at direct drilling were often abandoned, due to increased problems with cerealroot disease, particularly rhizoctonia root rot. In 1978, a long-term tillage-by-rotations trial was established at Avon (SA) to investigate the relationships between cereal root disease and tillage. Initially, direct-drilled treatments were sown with the Sirodrill which consisted of a fluted coulter followed by a narrow pointed sowing tine. A presswheel was designed to give minimal soil disturbance.
