"After a while you have to start making parts," says Wayne Moyer, manufacturing supervisor at the Bedford, Pennsylvania plant of Cannondale Corporation. He is speaking of the new aluminum engine parts that were giving the machine shop grief. Even at impossibly low speeds, cutting tools were snapping off on brand new Makino milling machines; the experience was costly and produced lots of scrap, but, most important, it prevented sorely needed production. Cannondale, internationally known for its high-performance bicycles and motor sport products, was in the midst of rolling out its 2003 lines of motorcycles and quad-powered ATVs- the X440 series. Assembly at the company's two plants in Pennsylvania was in full swing, as well as the machining of a variety of framing parts and engine components.
