The subject of the presented failure analysis is the actuator of an air shut-off valve. The combination shaft/bearing bush failed due to classical "scuffing". More precisely, it is adhesive/ abrasive wear involving a main material transfer from the bushing to the shaft. During the discussion of this case study, the unfavorable choice of materials for this component combination will be presented in detail.
