Managed Health Care: A Pivotal Segmentation Strategy for Today's Rapidly Changing Health Care Industry

In today's complex and rapidly changing health care industry, pharmaceutical manufacturers face multiple challenges that mandate greater efficiency in the marketplace. These challenges include increased generic competition, loss of patent protection, more OTC shifts, increasing government regulations., rising out-of-pocket costs for branded drugs, multitier formularies, and the dramatic growth the Medicare part D benefit has fueled in managed care. According to a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services study, third parties, including the government, paid for three-fourths of all prescriptions in the United States in 2006, and industry experts predict the current demographics and anticipated legislative swings will cause this percentage to continue to trend upward.
