HALOPHILIC ARCHAEA OF HALOFERAX GENUS ISOLATED FROMANTHROPOCENTRIC TELEGA (PALADA) SALT LAKE

The halophilic microorganisms, belongingmainly to Archaea, have as common feature thecapacity to inhabit environment with high saltconcentrations which are widely distributedthrough of the world" either in solid or liquidforms. Such kind of environments as salt mine andanthropocentric salt lakes that resulted after saltmine exploitation was relinquished, are commonlyfound in Romania either in intra or extraCarpathians areas. Some previous investigationslead to isolation of a number of halophilicmicroorganisms, both Bacteria and Archaea, inmedium with high NaCI and MgC12concentrations6'7. Some preliminary taxonomic studies revealed the presence of member of generaHaloferax and Haloarcula in water bodies of someman-made young salt lakes from Sldnic Prahova.A new species, namely Haloferax prahovense, wasproposed for a strain (TL 6T) isolated from Telega(Palada) salt lake8. Telega village, separated byCampina (town) through Doftana River, is situatedat 5 km from it, in the west part of Prahova County.The village covers a hillock of sub-Carpathian,area with medium altitude relief (450-700 m),characterized by irregularities of ground, manyvalleys and swales crossed by streams9-11. Therivulet Sarata, the Teleajen River affluent, is mainwater flow. Salt extraction in Telega started before1685 and was conducted for more than 330 years,
