Fears of contaminated drinking water and broken lines have led a Cass County rural water district to proscribe fire departments from hooking pumps directly to hydrants firefighters say they rely on in areas where there is no other readily available water source. For years, Cass County Rural Water District No. l allowed firefighters to use its system but asked that district employees be notified before a truck hooked up to a hydrant and that precautions be taken to prevent backflow or breakage. In March, the district decided to reverse that policy because of liability concerns.
