Mammographic breast cancer screening Part I Randomised trials: uncertain, at best modest, reduction in deaths from breast cancer

The harm-benefit balance of organised mammographic screening for breast cancer is difficult to determine. The following series of reviews examines data published since our previous reviews on this topic, published in 2006 and 2007. In this issue, we have analysed the results of randomised trials assessing the efficacy of organised breast cancer screening.In a future issue, we will examine the results of non-randomised studies and the adverse consequences of screening, particularly those related to overdiagnosis. These reviews will be followed by practical proposals for providing information to women who are considering breast cancer screening.
