Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the Scottish Government's decision to give consent for the development of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC). The development consists of 11 wind turbines and their connecting cables, sited between 2 and 4.5 km off the Aberdeenshire coast, potentially capable of generating up to 100 MW, providing enough energy to meet the needs of over 49,000 homes - almost half of the homes in Aberdeen. Wind farms work well, when the wind blows, but there have ben criticisms of its location from many quarters. The positioning of the farm, where many supply ships currently sit awaiting entry to the harbour and where helicopters arrive and depart, is not seen as ideal. It's not clear how much commercial power will be produced, as the farm is designated as a test centre for offshore wind technology.
