The use of polystyrene microtitrc wells for enzyme linked immunosorbant assays (ELISA):has become commonplace in recent years.' However, ohiy a limited number of studies have investigated the effect of different preparation methods on the properties of polystyrene surfaces. Oreskes and Suhger2 and Holland and Katchalski-Katzir3' have shown that p'assie adsorption to polystyrene surfaces can lead to conformafiona) changes within the protein WObcule, whsle Sutcr and Butler4 demonstrated a significant reduction in luncilonahty of such molecule". Nonetheless, passive- adsorption of proteins , 'On polystyrene for use in solid-phase immunoassays has become a widespread immobilisation method due to its relative ease and the low cost of manufacture.
