It is well known that the amphiphilic polymers which consist of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups can stabilize polymer particles and can form aggregates, like micelles, as the results of the intermolecular and/or intramolecular hydrophobic interactions.1'3 However, few publications can be found concerned with alkali-soluble random copolymers as a polymeric emulsifier in emulsion polymerization.4 The properties of alkali-soluble random'copolymers are expected to be similar to those of other polymeric emulsifiers, but the behavior and contribution in emulsion polymerization would be different from those of conventional polymeric emulsifiers.
