Preparation and characterization area-selectively assembled multi-component organosilane monolayers

Organosilane monolayers, which have surfaces terminated by various kinds of functional groups, are useful for manipulation of physicochemical properties of solid surfaces. Micropatterned monolayers is expected to use as a model for the fundamental study of biological interaction as well as a templates for 2-dimensional or three dimensional scaffolds for tissue engineering. Since organosilane monolayer is transparent, micropatterning employing vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)-ray photodecomposition process was proposed. By choosing 172nm VUV-ray as an illumination source, a local decomposition of irradiated part of the monolayer can be accomplished. In this study, micropatterned organosilane monolayers were prepared by a stepwise local photochemical decomposition and chemical vapor a adsorption (CVA) process. The multiphase surface thus obtained was characterized by various characterization techniques.
