Cold desert region of India is the major challenge for crop production to meet out local need.Its difficult to grow the crop during winter season where temperature falls up to-40 deg C,which will retard the growth of crop or not allow to germinate.Gothic shape with vertical sidewall greenhouse was designed and used to grow the crop.Snow load and wind load are the major component considered to design appropriate structure of greenhouse.Wind blows at a speed of 55 m/s in these areas.Tomato-cauliflower-tomato crop sequence was grown.Yield of tomato-cauliflower-tomato were 68.0,58.0 and 68.0 t/ha respectively.Performance of greenhouse in respect to rise in temperature inside the greenhouse was 81.91% and thermal efficiency of the greenhouses (63.52%) for crop production were evaluated.Temperature prediction model was developed based on the energy balance principle.Cost of construction for gothic shape with vertical sidewall greenhouse was Rs.820.11 per square meter.Benefit cost ratio analysis show that the project is viable (51.4% break even point) to construct permanent greenhouses in cold desert region.
