Conventional plasticizes incorporated in flexible polyvinyl chloride have long been criticized for being health hazardous. Flexible PVC with those plasticizers has also been suffered from performance drop after lengthy use due to the migration and volatilization of plastizers. Efforts have been made to endow permanent plasticizing effect to PVC without migration problems of plasticizers. For example, PVC grafted on EVA has been extensively studied as internally plasticized PVC, and products are available on a commercial scale. However, the VC grafted on EVA has low transparency and inferior mechanical properties compared to PVC plasticized with low molecular weight plasticizers such as di-sec-octylphthalate(DOP). We report herein an effort to overcome the above-mentioned disadvantages of conventional plasticizers and those of PVC grafted on EVA. This paper deals with the preparation of PVC grafted on poly(ethylene-co-butyl acrylate-to carbon monoxide), Elvaloy, manufactured by DuPont. Elvaloy has similar refractive index with PVC and was designed to obtain some degree of compatibility with PVC. Elvaloy also has more grafting sites than EVA, which enables theresulting PVC graftmers to attain benefits such as improved mechanical properties. Characteristics of PVC grafted on Elvaloy are also included in this report.
