Hoganas marked the fiftieth anniversary of its first entry into the Japanese market earlier this year at a reception in the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo attended by over 100 customers, staff and suppliers. In 1956, the company acted as a supplier of sponge iron powder; Sven Hulthen, who led this activity, is credited with having a major role in the development of the Japanese PM industry as a whole. The subsidiary Hoganas Japan KK (HJKK), founded in 1985, now has one-third of the Japanese powder market. The opening of the Saitama mixing plant, 90 km north of Tokyo, in 1987, allowing the introduction of Starmix bonded technology, was an important step in the company's development. Capacity for press ready mixes at Saitama has been increased by 50 percent this year to support growth.
