In order to satisfy future efficiency and performance goals of the Air Force,the gas-turbine operating temperature and pressure regime must be increased.Operating pressures approaching 5.07 MPa (735 psi) in an advanced gas-turbine combustor are envisioned.However,several key engineering problems must be resolved before higher-pressure gas-turbine engines can be developed.Since the fuel will need to serve a dual role that includes being a coolant,it may be injected into the chamber under some conditions at supercritical temperatures.Note the critical properties of JP-8 are approximately 673 K (750degF) and 2.2-2.3 MPa (320-485 psia),depending on the formulation [Yu and Eser,1995].Furthermore,the possibility of either thermal or catalytic decomposition of the fuel at extreme conditions complicates the physics because of the multi-species,multi-phase nature of the decomposed fuel,not to mention the associated problem of the formation of solid carbonaceous deposits in the fuel system.
