Although many positive things are happening in the use of spatial information, some governments are still not quite getting it. In June this year I gave a keynote presentation at the 11th Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Conference in Rotterdam. The GSDI has a strong track record in leading the way in this field. It has had success with projects such as the INSPIRE initiative in Europe, and in subsequent initiatives such as GIDEON in the Netherlands and the UK's Place Matters: the Location Strategy for the United Kingdom.
